Commemorating the birthday of His Majesty The King, the health ministry announced the construction of a Multi-Disciplinary Super-Speciality Hospital in the capital on 21st February. The hospital will be built within the national referral hospital campus. The existing referral hospital will be refurbished to serve as the Thimphu General Hospital to address the increasing healthcare demands of the capital and surrounding regions.

The health ministry said the Multi-Disciplinary Super-Speciality Hospital, will provide advanced super-specialist medical services, such as organ transplants, cancer treatment, and other specialised care.

According to the health minister, this project will improve the referral system and make judicious use of the healthcare facilities at the National Referral Hospital.

“This MDSSH will include a 250-bed National Cancer Hospital, a 400-bed, In-patient Diagnostic block, an IPD block and an Out-patient Diagnostic, OPD block. The main objectives of the construction of MDSSH are to reduce overcrowding at JDWNRH, improve access to specialised healthcare services and introduce high-quality special care to minimise dependence on ex-country referrals,” said Tandin Wangchuk, Health Minister.

He added the Multi-Disciplinary Super-Speciality Hospital project is estimated to require more than Nu 8.5bn investment.

According to the health ministry, the project will be executed in packages to ensure efficient resource utilisation, reduce delays, and maintain standards due to its scale and complexity.

The hospital is expected to be completed by the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan.
