The National Assembly today enacted the Consumer Protection Act of Bhutan 2012 after deliberating for two days.

The house amended section 115 of the act which states that a person who supplies or offers to supply any goods or services shall provide the consumer with a receipt for any purchase of goods or services.

Members said it should not be mandatory for the suppliers to issue receipts to consumers unless asked for by the consumers themselves.

Citing an example of a pan shop, they said if it is made mandatory for the suppliers to issue a receipt, whatever profit the pan shop makes will have to be used in printing the receipts.
