Bumthang residents question road quality

Bumthang residents are raising concerns about the safety of the pothole ridden road in Dekiling.

The road was blacktopped in March last year. A few months later, potholes started appearing in different places.

Motorists and residents say the quality of road is questionable.

Tshering Dorji, a resident, believes that there is some foul play involved.

“We do not know whose fault it is, whether it is the dzongkhag municipality’s fault or the contractor’s fault. But the road has not been built properly.”

The municipality and the contractor attributed the potholes partly to the marshy condition of the area. The leaky municipal water pipes near the road added to the problem.

Motorists said it is difficult and risky to drive on the pothole ridden road. To avoid the potholes, motorists drive the vehicle along the roadside making it risky for pedestrians.

The maintenance work of the roads in and around Bumthang Thromde will begin soon with works already awarded to a contractor.

To ensure quality, the department has awarded the work to one of the highest bidders.
