After much controversy and issues, the Tingtibi–Wangdigang bypass road in Zhemgang has been finally handed over to the Department of Roads. The construction of Tingtibi- Wangdigang bypass road in Zhemgang started in 2008. The construction works were delayed due to various issues. The 16-kilometre road was complete in 2010.
According to the Department, the road is now safe and usable for motorists.
“We found the quality and standard of the road okay and safe,” said the Executive Engineer of Zhemgang, Tshering Peljore.
However, some of the motorists plying along the bypass road said, frequent shooting boulders from rocky cliff is posing a risk to the motorists, as well as the people traveling along the road.
Meanwhile, the Department of Roads in Zhemgang says, this is due to loose fraction of rocks on the cliffs, and it will require some time to stabilise. “Within one to two years, we hope it will be stabilized,” said the Executive Engineer.
However, the Department has now deployed labourers along the road to clear the boulders on the road to keep traffic open. The bypass road has shortened the travel time by two hours and distance by about 40 kilometres.
The construction of the road was funded by the Asian Development Bank.
