The first-ever Bhutan–India Friendship Football Tournament kicked off yesterday in Samdrup Jongkhar, bringing excitement to fans on both sides of the border. Adding to the excitement, Bhutan’s most celebrated footballer, Chencho Gyeltshen, played the opening from Samjong FC, giving local talents a chance to learn and grow alongside a national icon.
In the opening match, more than 3,000 supporters from both countries filled the stadium, creating a vibrant atmosphere as they cheered for their favourite teams.

The presence of Chencho Gyeltshen drew a huge crowd. Although Samjong FC could not qualify for the quarterfinals, for local players, sharing the field with the national football sensation was an experience they will carry forward.
“Playing in a local tournament and participating in this kind of event is a very different experience. We have a famous player, Chencho Gyeltshen, in our team, and it is a great experience for us,” said Ajit Bhujel, Footballer, Samdrup Jongkhar.
“It is a very good opportunity for us to play with him. We were able to learn from his skills, and at the same time, show our own talent. It is a great opportunity for me,” said Leki Khandu, Footballer, Samdrup Jongkhar.
Chencho Gyeltshen says he feels happy to play alongside local players, adding that such tournaments help encourage and inspire young talent.
People here love football, and many young people are interested in it. I like coming here to meet them, but without a tournament, we do not get a chance. So I am thankful to Sonam Dukpa for organising this tournament and allowing me to meet them here,” said Chencho Gyeltshen, Footballer.
The tournament is organised by the Bhutan-India Friendship Association in Samdrup Jongkhar to further strengthen friendship between the two countries.
“The tournament is being held to honour and celebrate the 70th birthday of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. This tournament is basically to know the public across the border, and also to bring economic development to Samdrup Jongkhar, whereby players and Indians will stay in hotels and hoteliers will enjoy the economic benefit,” said Sonam Dukpa, Vice President, BIFA, Samdrup Jongkhar.
As the tournament continues, it is not only raising sporting spirits, but also strengthening bonds across the border
