With preparations complete, Kuensel Phodrang in Thimphu stands ready to host the month-long Kathrid Empowerment and Kyilchog Dorji Threngwa. His Holiness the Je Khenpo will administer the sacred empowerments beginning Monday. While the organisers are ensuring a smooth experience for thousands of devotees expected to attend, they are also requesting the public to plan ahead, especially for the journey to the site.
Preparatory works began a week ago, with authorities focusing on improving facilities and accessibility at the venue. The grounds have been laid out to accommodate around 30,000 devotees.
Among the additions are 13 large LED screens placed across the venue for people to follow the proceedings clearly from wherever they are seated.
“Devotees usually try to secure seats close to where they can see His Holiness, but this is not necessary. To ensure clear visibility, we have installed LED screens,” said Pema Gyeltshen, Tshogki Drungchen, Central Monastic Body.
Sanitation facilities have also been expanded and improved. More than 100 additional toilets have been built, bringing the total to around 160. Toilets located closer to the venue have been prioritised for elderly devotees to ensure easier and more convenient access.
“We have also set up medical tents here in case devotees fall sick. For more serious emergencies, we have ambulances on standby,” said Pema Gyeltshen, Tshogki Drungchen, Central Monastic Body.
Temporary shops and stalls are also being set up around the ground for daily needs of those attending the ceremony.
Officials are asking the public to plan their travel. Private vehicles will not be allowed up to the venue; however, they may drop devotees off before 5 AM. After that, the public is asked to use the designated taxi and bus services to and from Kuensel Phodrang.
Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, on behalf of the people of Bhutan, requested His Holiness to bestow the empowerments. According to the Central Monastic Body, the ceremony includes teachings on impermanence, karma, the importance of practising the Dharma, and other core Buddhist principles.
