OAG drops alleged rape case against Home Minister

The case alleging the Home Minister of rape now remains closed. The Office of the Attorney General dropped the case citing delayed reporting and absence of timely medical examination. The case first surfaced towards the end of last year, when a woman accused the minister of the offence. The matter attracted considerable attention, including widespread discussion on social media.

According to sources, the OAG dropped the case in 18 days of receiving it from the police in January. Sources indicate that the absence of a timely medical examination significantly weakened the case, as the complaint was lodged more than a year after the alleged incident. Further, the affair was consensual. Combined with gaps in the chain of evidence, these factors made it difficult to substantiate the claims.

The case originated when a woman, in her early 40s, filed a complaint with the police, accusing the minister’s wife of verbal harassment. The woman alleged that the harassment was connected to a reported affair between herself and the minister.

Sources state that the complaint against the minister’s wife was seen as a reasonable reaction to the personal circumstances surrounding the alleged affair, reportedly supported by evidence. The woman subsequently withdrew the complaint. However, a month later, she filed a separate complaint, accusing the Home Minister of rape.

BBS also learned that the case was referred to the Office of the Attorney General after the woman raised concerns about the police operating under the home ministry, which could potentially compromise the course of investigation.
