Darla Higher Secondary School in Chhukha is finally set to overcome its long-standing water shortage issue. The school has been struggling with severe water shortages, making life difficult for its boarding students. With the number of students increasing each year, the demand for water has only intensified.
The school management says the old water source was unreliable.
However, a new water pump project has been completed, aiming to resolve the issue once and for all.
A new water source has been identified below the school and water is pumped to meet the school’s needs.
K.P Sharma, Vice Principal, Darla HSS said “Earlier, water shortage was acute and we did not even have enough water to prepare meals for the students. It was difficult for them as they did not have water to even wash their clothes. It was challenging, especially for the girls.”
Karma Jurmi, Phuentshogling Dungpa said “Water shortage here has been persistent as available water sources are far away from the school and as a result, several projects failed to provide enough water. We found a water source below the school, so we implemented this pumping facility that can push water upward and today it is a success.”
As part of the initiative, a 20,000-litre reservoir has been constructed.
The project, implemented at a cost of over Nu 600,000, was made supported by the UNICEF.
Last year, the school accommodated nearly 250 boarding students. The number is expected to rise again this year.
With the new water system in place, school authorities are optimistic that students will no longer have to face difficulties caused by water shortage.
