The Tsirang District Court has sentenced a 23-year-old man from Tsirang to one year in prison for burglary. The judgment was passed on Monday. The man was apprehended in October last year in connection with a burglary case in Damphu town.

The judgment stated that the convict on the night of the 11th of October last year entered the Guru Lhakhang in Damphu town. He had stolen some religious items after breaking the lock.

The convict had also taken belongings including cash from the temple’s caretaker house. He had also stolen belongings from the temple’s butter lamp room.

All the stolen items, however, have been recovered.

The convict was provided with legal aid and was represented by a lawyer throughout the court proceedings due to his poor family background.

The court ordered the police to coordinate rehabilitative initiative and other relevant services should the convict opt to serve prison term instead of paying thrimthue.

However, a source told BBS that the convict had paid thrimthue amounting to more than 35,000 ngultrum and went to avail himself of counselling services in Gelephu.
