The highest unemployment rate is observed among individuals with higher secondary school education. There are about 12,000 unemployed persons in the third quarter this year and nearly half of them come from this group. The Department of Employment and Entrepreneurship said this is because they do not have the right qualifications and skills for the labour market.

The department is conducting a labour market information and employment awareness programme in schools in Thimphu. It is to guide class 10 and 12 students to map their career pathways.

“It is important for middle and higher secondary school students to know what kind of jobs are there in the labour market and prepare with the right skills and knowledge in advance,” Sherab Zangpo, Chief Programme Officer, Employment and Entrepreneurship Department.

The department said vocational training centres are one of the places to gain skills.

“It is important for us to prepare for the job market. Through today’s programme, we got an opportunity to learn about preparation and career choices,” said Kinley Bidha, a student of Motithang HSS.

“This programme has provided us with insightful lessons on how to choose a career carefully. We can equip ourselves with the skills necessary and also explore the key industries that are present in Bhutan. It has taught us how to align with our goals,” said Sangay Ngedup, another Student of Motithang HSS.

Similar programmes will be conducted in other parts of the country beginning next year. It is one of the initiatives to reduce the unemployment rate, which stands at 3.1 per cent today.
