The People’s Democratic Party emerged as the frontrunner on the bustling poll day of the general round of elections held yesterday, winning 30 constituencies. Meanwhile, the Bhutan Tendrel Party who will now be serving as the Opposition Party, secured victory in 17 constituencies. The Election Commission of Bhutan announced the official results, today.
The People’s Democratic Party has secured a total of 179,652 votes. Of it, the PDP secured 126,686 in EVM and 52,966 in postal ballots.
The Bhutan Tendrel Party got a total of 147,123 votes. It secured 91,587 in EVM and 55,536 in postal ballots.
“The Election Commission of Bhutan would like to thank everybody we were involved in the conduct of the Fourth National Assembly Elections. We would like to sincerely thank The King and The Je Khenpo and all the people in Bhutan for blessing us and supporting us in conducting the NA elections successfully. We would like to inform the general public that the election was conducted very smoothly,” said Phub Dorji, ECB’s Director of Secretariat.
The general round of the Fourth National Assembly Elections, yesterday, saw a voter turnout of 65.6%. This is an increase from 63% voter turnout in the Primary Round held on November 30, last year.
However, it is a decrease of nearly 6% from the general round of the 2018 NA elections which saw a record 71.46% voter turnout.
A total of 326,775 Bhutanese took part in the general round yesterday. From the total, 218,273 votes were cast through the EVM, while almost 108,502 were postal voters.
According to the ECB’s final electoral roll, there are 496,836 eligible voters in the country.
With the election season coming to an end, this marks the beginning of another political era. Both parties will now be playing crucial roles in shaping the nation’s future.
Meanwhile, the petition period of 10 working days begins today and will end on the 24th of this month.
