To cope up with the effects of the changing climate, a workshop on resilient seed system; tools and techniques for climate change adaptation is underway in the capital.
The training aims to strengthen technical capacity of stakeholders on the resilient seed system. It includes DIVA GIS (Global Information System), Maxent and climate analogue tools for its application in conservation, evaluation and utilisation of crop varieties.
During the three-day workshop, the participants will be familiarised with several tools, such as DIVA GIS and climate analogue tools. It will facilitate them in identifying the future climatic pattern in Bhutan and in other countries.
The Genetic Resources Policy Specialist from Policy Unit, Roonie Veroony, said the purpose of the workshop is to model the pattern of crops against the climate model to be able to better identify which crops and which varieties can resist extreme weather.
Roonie Veroony also said the workshop is not about the theoretical issues but pragmatic.
He also added that Bhutan is one of the countries that will be affected, in a larger ways, by the climate change since the country has different climatic conditions. “The changing pattern of rain will have a greater impact on the backbone of the country, agriculture.”
Roonie Veroony said it is important for the Bhutan to start thinking ahead and start looking at the future now.
The three-day training is initiated by the National Biodiversity Centre, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Biodiversity International based in Rome and New Delhi. Experts from Bhutan, Nepal and India are taking parting in the training.
