The Bhutan Medical and Health Council (BMHC) is investigating the death of an infant at Largyab Basic Health Unit (BHU) in Dagana last month. The father, in his social media post, claimed that Drukjeygang BHU’s ambulance was called for help but it was stranded without fuel.

The BMHC has started contacting people involved in the case. The council also spoke with Drukjeygang BHU in charge and the driver, on the ambulance fuel. After the preliminary investigation, which is still going on, it was confirmed that there was no fuel in the ambulance.

“At the moment we are still conducting the investigation, we are getting report from 112 call, then the doctor involved and even from the dzongkhag health sector who is responsible for managing the ambulance as he is the focal person of Ministry of Health in the Dzongkhag,” shared Nima Sangay, the Deputy Registrar at BMHC.

He added, at the moment they cannot say who is accountable.

“After a thorough investigation, we have a professional ethics committee, the experts will review the case. Then there will come a certain recommendation and the accountable(s) will be fixed there. Just now we are doing the primary investigation and while doing in-depth investigation, we will be able to co-relate what they said just now and what they will say later.”

The council will visit Dagana soon for further investigation. A six-week-old baby died on 26th August after waiting for an ambulance to take her to Damphu hospital. The baby suffered from Central Cyanosis and had shortness of breath, lethargy and diarrhoea.

The ambulance from Tsirang hospital was then arranged, but it was too late.
