The Royal Insurance Corporation of Bhutan Limited (RICBL) office in Punakha paid Nu 5.4 million as insurance money for the houses destroyed by windstorm recently in Punakha. The insurance amount, is so far the highest, paid by the RICBL in Punakha.

Around 300 houses on eight Gewogs were affected by the windstorm on April 16. Kabisa was the worst hit.

The RICBL office carried out extensive assessment and started paying insurance from April 26 onwards.

According to the Branch Manager, Neten Sherub, despite limited man power the works were fast tracked with the help of Dzongkhag and Gewog officials and also staff from Thimphu.

“Upon getting the information from the Gewogs, we immediately deployed our officials for the assessment.”

Over 187 houses were provided insurance under rural house insurance scheme. The money were paid mostly for the new CGI sheets, wall cracks and truss damages.

For the remaining houses, officials say, the compensation will be given once the reassessment is complete.
