India-Bhutan Foundation Twenty20 cricket cup underway

The India-Bhutan Foundation Twenty20 cup 2017 started yesterday at the Pelkhil Oval in Thimphu.

Six cricket teams are participating in the annual tournament. The opening match was played between Bhutan Tourism Corporation Limited (BTCL) and Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital (JDWNRH).

Team JDWNRH won the toss and opted to bat first. They batted for 20 overs and set a target of 122 runs for BTCL to chase.

In reply, BTCL took just 14 overs to achieve the target. Despite efforts with the bowl, JDWNRH could now contain the BTCL batsmen.

The Head Coach Damber S. Gurung with the Bhutan Cricket Council Board, is hoping this tournament to yield better results than the past ones. “Most of the play has improved a lot, the way they are batting, the way they are fielding, bowling, it has improved a lot,” he said.

With such tournaments, Tandin Wangchuk, a BTCL player is optimistic about the future of cricket in Bhutan. “I hope that the tournament will continue and look forward to see great talents coming up.”

The second match of the day was played between Takin City and Thimphu Knights. Matches will be played every weekend.

The finals of the tournament, organised by the Bhutan Cricket Council Board, is scheduled for November 4.
