DPT government optimistic

The Prime Minister Lyonchhen Jigmi Y. Thinley said almost all the promises made by his government to alleviate poverty and to create employment will be met. Lyonchhen was presenting the State of the Nation Report to the joint sitting of the parliament yesterday.

Lyonchhen Jigmi Y. Thinley informed the house that there are 66 geogs without road connectivity. Of that 34 geogs will be connected with road by the end of the next financial year.

He said only 8,000 families are left without electricity as of now. These families will also be provided with electricity before the end of their two year term.

Meanwhile, the government is in various stages of providing electricity to some 31,000 households.

Lyonchhen said 94 percent of the Bhutanese children are enrolled in schools. This has been made possible with the upgrading of primary schools and opening of new community schools. In remote villages, at least 60 extended class rooms have been opened.

Lyonchhen informed the house that 35 doctors have been hired from abroad and 20 ambulances received as donations. With this, every hospital in the dzongkhags have two doctors and two ambulances each. Prime Minister reported to the house that 20 more ambulances will be provided by Japan later in the year.

Lyonchhen pointed out that providing safe drinking water to all is a challenging task in the face of diminishing water sources. Nevertheless he said substantial progress has been made after building over 200 new and rehabilitated 51 rural water supply schemes in the past year.

Reporting on the government’s rapid economic blue print, except for promotion of Bhutan as the regional hub for world class education services, everything he said is going as planned. The Prime Minister reported that no significant success has been achieved in this field. He however added that he is still hopeful that the project will materialise.
