Fossil fuel import almost equals hydropower export

Fossil fuel import almost equals hydropower exportBhutan exported more energy in the form of hydropower than it has imported in the form of fossil fuel, last year. Bhutan’s energy trade balance recorded a surplus of Nu 331 M.

Even though Bhutan has enough energy in the form of hydropower for both domestic requirement and export, it has also been importing huge amounts of energy in the form of fossil fuel.

In 2015, Bhutan’s net earning from hydropower sale to India was Rs 7.7B. However, in the same year, Rs 7.3 billion worth of fossil fuel was imported.

This shows while the hydropower sector may be seen as an important rupee earning sector, most of the Rupees it earns is utilized in the same year to pay for imports of fossil fuel.
