Local leaders question omnipresent roadside signposts

Local leaders question omnipresent roadside signpostsThis is a highway, not a runway reads one roadside signpost. A kilometer down the road, there is another. It says after whisky, driving is risky. The DANTAK roadside signposts are amusing. Some are downright hilarious but apparently, local leaders in Chhukha are far from being amused.

As far as they are concerned, there are far too many signboards. At some places, there is one every few meters. There is no uniformity and all the signboards are in English. The local leaders raised the issue at the Dzongkhag Tshogdu meeting.

“All the signboards are written only in English with the DANTAK logo alone. There is no signboard in Dzongkha and there is no mention of our government,” said Bongo Gup, Tashi Dorji.

In an email correspondence, a DANTAK official said the signboards are there for a social purpose. They break the monotony of a long journey and serve to caution commuters to take extra care while driving.

It says they will also put up cautionary signboards in Dzongkha if necessary after getting approval from the government.

The Dzongkhag Tshogdu decided to submit its concerns to the Ministry of Works and Human Settlement. Meanwhile, it will serve our commuters well to remember it is not a rally, we should enjoy the view of the valley and yes Beep beep, Don’t sleep.
