Shortage of classrooms in Thimphu’s schoolsThe capital city’s infrastructure may be on a rapid boom, but the construction of schools to cater to an increasing number of students, remain at its slowest.

Thimphu Thromde is worried, it was high time; there were more schools today for all students.

Loselling Middle Secondary School has 45 students, exceeding the ideal capacity of 32. It was converted into a classroom from a biology laboratory.

Vice Principal of the school Leki Dorji said the number of classrooms was not keeping up with huge increases in the rate of admissions.

But there are many other schools facing acute shortage of classrooms in the capital today.

Thimphu Thrompon Kinlay Dorjee said while the government’s initiative on central schools can be applauded; waiting for it to be implemented was not going to solve the problem in hand.

Budget constraint was the biggest challenge the Thromde faces today.

There are around 19,000 students in the capital and the increase comes to over a 1,000 students every year.
