Building demolished for flouting construction rules

Building-DemolishedA few buildings in the capital have been demolished for flouting constructions rules. The Thimphu Thromde said they are taking stern action to make sure the constructions are carried out as per the drawings approved by the Thromde.

Thromde office says some building owners construct underground parking but later turn it into apartments. Attics are also not allowed as per the rules.

Thimphu Thrompon, Kinlay Dorjee said they have demolished some attics and underground construction over the years. “Anything which is extra from the drawing will be demolished. People strictly need to abide by the rules and regulations.” Thimphu Thromde says it is firm in its resolution to ensure every building is constructed as per drawings approved by it.

If rules are flouted, demolition is the answer and not fines. Thrompon Kinlay Dorjee says inspectors make rounds at construction sites to monitor.

Kinlay Dorjee said they don’t want to make a system of imposing fines. He said imposing fines might render the system weak. “Rich people can pay any amount of fine levied while only those who can’t afford will be following the system. So imposing fines will make the rules weak. There will be two rules.”

Since 2011, the Thimphu Thromde has approved around 400 constructions.
