Bhutan signs Framework for Energy agreement

Energy+-CooperationThe ‘Framework for Energy + Cooperation between Bhutan and Energy+ Partners’ Agreement was signed in India’s capital, New Delhi, today.

The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit. The agriculture minister Dr.Pema Gyamtsho, represented Bhutan. The other co-signers were the State Secretary of Norway, Arvinn Eikeland Gadgil, and the Director General of the Asian Development Bank in India, Seethpathy Chander.

The purpose of the document is to increase access to sustainable energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the use and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency in Bhutan.

The framework could also serve as a model to be replicated for cooperation between Energy+ partners in other countries.

The agreement will also support Bhutan’s efforts to achieve the targets in the ‘Sustainable Energy for All’ initiative as well as Bhutan’s Five-year Development Plan.

It is also expected to support the implementation of the ‘National Strategy and Action Plan for Low Carbon Development 2012
