Cattle theft on the rise in Sarpang

When farmers lose their cattle to wildlife, they at least get the carcass back. Sometimes if they are lucky, they also get compensation. But in Sarpang, farmers lose their cattle to thieves. Cattle stealing in the district was quite rampant in the past. While it has receded due to lockdowns and patrolling during the pandemic, residents are now fearing that it is slowly coming back. The district reported some isolated cases recently.

Dhanapati Acharya, a farmer in Pelrithang Khamaed in Gelephu Gewog lost two milking cows on Saturday night from the cowshed. He is now left with two calves.

“I called the Gup and those who reside nearby. The Gup along with my neighbours went looking for the miscreants till the border area but could not trace them,” said Dhanapati Acharya.

He added that a similar incident has also occurred in Namkhaling Demkhong in Gelephu Thromde.

But the Gelephu Police said they have not received any reports regarding such cases.

However, to prevent such incidences, police started patrolling.
