Women’s national football league to kick-off from tomorrow

The Women’s national football league was cancelled halfway through the tournament last year due to the pandemic. A year since then, the Kelme Bhutan Women’s football League 2021 will kick off tomorrow at the Changlimithang. Six teams will play in a home and away format for the first time.

With the men’s football league having ended earlier this month, it is now time for the women to display their skills and talent on the pitch. Six teams from Thimphu, Punakha and Paro will compete for the league title.

Phuntsho Wangdi, the Head of Commercial and Communication under the Bhutan Football Federation says the teams will play a total of 30 matches. “These teams have already played in the past. They played in the women’s district league and also in the national league previously and they are very good” he said.

He added teams from other districts such as Monggar, Trashigang, Samdrup Jongkhar and Samtse who also usually take part could not be invited this time due to the Covid pandemic.

Yangchenphug Women’s FC will take on Mandala FC in the first match of the league.
