Maintenance of the turbines of MHP in full swing

The 720MW Mangdechhu Hydropower Plant in Trongsa is carrying out inspection, rectification and maintenance of all four power generating machines alternatively in this lean season. The lean season for the hydropower generation starts in October and lasts till March.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) executing the works assured that the maintenance and rectification would be fully completed by December.

“When a power plant of such huge magnitude is commissioned, there will be little problems which need rectification. So all the problems identified have been rectified,” said Sanjay Guha, the Construction Manager for BHEL.

The plant is currently implementing the solution for the problems faced by one Unit in all other machines on a rotational basis depending upon the shutdown possibilities of other turbines. The 1st Unit was successfully restored in September after a breakdown occurred.

“Oil leakage through generator bearing has been rectified and another leakage through turbine guide bearing has been identified and rectified in one of the Units. Now we are in the process of similar rectification in the other units too. Some brakes which were in mechanical mode got actuated too,” he added.

Automation running for all the four machines is scheduled on 15th of this December to test its conditions.

The project generated about 1,165 Million Units of electricity so far. And the flow rate, which is the volume of water flowing through its channel, is about 29 cubic metre per second as of yesterday. The required flow rate to run all the four units, as per the design is 118 cubic meter per second.
