Returns below expectation

It has been a little over a year since the establishment of Phuentshogling Gonor Chethuen Tshogpa, a farmer’s cooperative for vegetable production in Ramitey under Phuentshogling Gewog. Though the cooperative recorded a good yield of vegetables, the returns from the sales were not good.

A workshop to encourage women participation in LG elections

To encourage more women participation in the Local Government Elections in 2016, Bhutan Network for Empowering Women organised a workshop in Punakha. Some hundred participants form six Western Dzongkhag took part in the three-day workshop which ended today.

A book on democracy in Bhutan launched

The Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay, today launched the book titled “Democracy in Bhutan: The First Five Years 2008-13”. The book is authored by Gyambo Sithey of Centre for Research Initiatives. He is also the author of “Drukyul Decides: In the minds of Bhutan’s first voter”, published in 2008.

Decline in the consumption of firewood in Merak

Ever since the electrification of Merak Gewog under Trashigang in 2011, the consumption of firewood has been on the decline. The gewog, in the past, would use huge amount of firewood.

Around 24 participants from research centres, sub-centres and extension offices from various dzongkhags are taking part in the week-long workshop on participatory plant breeding in Paro. Participatory plant breeding is one of the methods for on-farm conservation and promotes use of local crop diversity.

Men die in unusual circumstances

A 38-year-old Man from Chaskhar in Monggar died on the spot due to explosion while fishing at Gishigwang from Gongri on last Sunday. He was using some explosive devices for fishing. Gishingwang is about 1 hour walk towards Thangrong from Sherichu.
