To set expected standards for performance and assessing teachers based on their roles and level of experience, Bhutan Professional Standards for Teachers was launched in Tsirang yesterday.
The initiative will be also linked to recruitment, remunerations, career development, promotion, and rewards and recognition.
The Bhutan Professional Standards for Teachers explains teacher quality within a framework of seven standards, which is further divided into 37 focus areas comprehensively encompassing teachers’ competencies and practices.
This also categorizes teachers into four career levels, which are beginning teachers, proficient teachers, accomplished teachers and distinguished teachers.
The Chief Program Officer 0f Education Ministry, Tashi Lhamo said earlier teachers are categorised as per their tenure. “Now we will place the teachers in different career stages depending upon their competencies. All these initiatives are to improve the quality of education.”
Meanwhile, the Fourth Pay Commission report has also recommended for perks and remunerations in line with Professional Standards for teachers.
“If endorsed, this would help to encourage teachers and retain the teachers in the teaching profession,” Karma Yeshey, the Secretary of MoE, said.
As of June last year there are about 9,500 teachers in the country.
