Zhemgang’s local leaders propose for a universityLocal leaders of Zhemgang are proposing for a university in Zhemgang to address regional balanced development. They feel a university in their area will bring about social economic growth.

The proposal was discussed during the two-day Dzongkhag Tshogdu while they were deliberating the upgrading of Phangkhar Primary School in Lower Kheng to a central school. It was one of the agendas for discussion in the meeting.

“We do not have single university in our region and most of our children are from poor family background,” said Nangkhor Gup, Dorji Wangchuk.

In absence of a university they have to send their children to other faraway dzongkhags, which is expensive, according to Dorji Wangchuk.

Nangla Gup, Richen Dorji said if their proposal to have a university in their dzongkhag gets approved, the entire central regional would benefit.

DT Chairperson, Dorji Wangchuk said their dzongkhag, which has been out of development and business loop, would see some activities, if a university is established in Zhemgang.

After much debate, the DT members decided to submit the proposal to the government.

Zhemgang has three central schools.
