The second edition of the Bhutan–India Friendship Association (BIFA) Cup 2026 began today at the Gelephu International Cricket Ground. The tournament brings together teams from Bhutan and Assam, India, highlighting the growing sporting ties between the two neighbouring countries.
This year’s tournament brings together four men’s teams—two from Bhutan and two from Assam, India—alongside one women’s team each from Bhutan and India. The event continues to highlight the growing sporting ties and cricket development efforts between the two neighbouring countries.
The opening match saw Bhutan’s Dragons XI register a 4-wicket victory over Bodoland, giving the home side a strong start to the tournament. However, the second match between Kokrajhar CCC and Himalayans XI was called off midway due to rain interruptions at the venue. Both the teams will be awarded a point each.
The tournament according to the organisers is aimed at strengthening bilateral relations while also supporting emerging cricket talent.
Dawa Penjor, General Secretary, BIFA said, “Our main motive in hosting this competition is to promote the ever-growing relations between Bhutan and India. Cricket is still a developing sport in both regions, and this platform allows players to showcase their talent and prepare for international tournaments.”
He added that the Gelephu International Cricket Ground provides an international-standard facility that can significantly contribute to the growth of the sport.
The tournament will continue until April 28, with more matches scheduled in the coming days. Organizers say they hope the event will not only boost competitive cricket but also further strengthen people-to-people ties between Bhutan and India through sport.
