A technical glitch at the Bank of Bhutan has led to multiple loan EMI deductions from customer accounts, raising concerns over digital banking safeguards and consumer protection. While the bank has assured reversals, some customers say the sudden debits caused panic and financial distress.
A customer’s account was deducted Nu 15,900 seven times in a single day wiping out more than Nu 100,000 from the account within hours.
For this customer, what should have been a routine monthly EMI payment turned into a financial shock. Instead of a single deduction, the system debited the amount repeatedly, pushing the total withdrawal to over Nu 111,000 in one day.
Many other customers reported similar incidents, sparking confusion and panic. Several shared their frustration online, questioning how such a technical error could occur in a major bank’s system.
In a notice on it official Facebook page, the Bank of Bhutan has acknowledged the glitch stating that some loan EMI payments were deducted multiple times from customer accounts. The bank has assured that the issue has been identified and all excess debits have been stopped. They have also promised to reverse the extra deductions promptly.
A BoB official said that excess amounts deducted were reimbursed adding that the bank’s technical team is monitoring the system.
Attempts by BBS to get further details from the Bank of Bhutan were unsuccessful today, with BOB stating that more information will be available tomorrow.
