Farmers in Kanglung Gewog in Trashigang now have a dedicated marketplace to sell their locally grown produce. Earlier, they had to either sell vegetables along roadsides or directly to shopkeepers at lower prices. The vegetable shed was constructed as part of build-up programme to celebrate the birth anniversary of His Majesty The King.
The market will operate only on Saturday and only local products will be sold here.
Until now, farmers had been selling their surplus farm produce in and around the Sherubtse college campus, along the roadside and to shopkeepers due to the lack of a proper market for farm products.
Kanglung Gewog produces 60 metric tonnes of vegetables, excluding potatoes.
Gayden Zangmo from Rongthung said, “There was not much problem selling vegetables around the college campus, but we were told that a few shopkeepers were complaining because we were selling vegetables in open areas. These days, I am focusing more on vegetable cultivation as it helps me earn an income. From now on, this shed will make it easier for us to sell our local vegetables.”
Druptho Choden from Kanglung said, “I used to sell vegetables around the college campus, so there was not much problem on sunny days. However, we faced difficulties during the rainy season. Now that we have a proper shed to sell our vegetables, it is much more convenient for us, and we are grateful for the support.”
Trashigang district invested around nine hundred thousand ngultrum to construct the shed.
For the farmers of Kanglung, the new shed is more than just a structure, it offers convenience and renewed motivation to continue cultivating local produce.
