To reduce the country’s dependence on imported bricks, Penden Cement is travelling nationwide to promote its eco‑friendly blocks. First produced in 2023, the lightweight and prefabricated blocks offer good insulation and long‑lasting durability. Recently, the company met with professionals in the construction sector of Paro, Haa and Thimphu.
The Autoclaved Aerated Concrete block is a lightweight, eco-friendly building material made from foamed concrete.Moreover, officials said it is cost-effective.
Currently, the company produces blocks in five different sizes.
The company said not many are aware of such blocks. So, they are meeting with engineers, architects, contractors, private firms and agents and other relevant officials.
So far, they met officials in eight districts.
Officials from Penden Cement demonstrated the blocks’ advantages over the red bricks that are largely used in the country.
Yeshey Dorji, Director of Penden Cement Authority Limited said “But unfortunately, people still prefer the conventional red bricks. I believe it’s because they are not aware of the benefits of using AAC blocks. That’s why our plant is currently producing less than 100 cubic metres a day.”
Rinchen Tshering, an engineer said “So far, we have not used such blocks. I have noticed that most private firms use imported red bricks. I have not seen these blocks being used in Paro District. I think using AAC blocks would benefit the government.”
Norbu Tshering, another engineer said “When constructing buildings, it’s difficult and time-consuming to cut through concrete and red bricks to conceal pipes within walls. But AAC blocks are easier and more convenient to cut, requiring less manpower and saving time.”
The company will continue to promote its products to enhance construction quality and reduce environmental impacts.
