Works for the construction of a bypass road along the Pa-chu in Paro is in full swing. Motorists will no longer have to ply through the narrow road from Bondey towards Paro town via the airport.
According to the Director General of the Department of Civil Aviation, Wangdi Gyeltshen, the construction of the new road was initiated to avoid safety threats to the airport.
This highway adjacent to the airport leading to Paro town does not meet the international standard for the safety of the airport. As per the international standard, the distance between the runway and the road should be 70 meters apart. However, at the moment, it is only 40 metres apart.
The construction works were carried out by Department of Roads. The works are expected to complete on time.
River protection walls are also being built along the pa-chu. Initially, the road widening works was planned from Bondey via Khangkhu to Paro town. But the plan was dropped since most of the land falls under private individuals and lots of works needs to be done.
About Nu.248 million was proposed for the construction of the road and river protection walls. Additional of Nu.97 million for the remaining works has also been proposed.
The works began from last November and is expected to complete by June next year. There are also plans to construct a new bridge replacing the old one located near the Paro College of Education.
