The residents of Jomotshangkha Dungkhag in Samdrup Jongkhar say there is a need for a Road Safety and Transport Authority (RSTA) branch office in their dungkhag. Without one, they have to travel almost 190 kilometres to the dzongkhag’s RSTA office avail themselves of the services.

With farm road connections to Langchenphu, Serthig and Lauri Gewogs, most farmers now own boleros. And with civil servants and other corporate officials, there are more than 200 vehicles in the dungkhag.

“With an increasing number of vehicles, there is a need for an RSTA office here, Jomotshangkha is a remote place we have to travel to Samdrup Jongkhar to update our vehicle documents and sometimes when we unknowingly break traffic rules, also to pay fines also we have to travel there,” Sherab Tenzin said.

“Even to make a learner’s license, we have to visit Samdrup Jongkar’s regional RSTA office, which is troublesome, we have to travel in a vehicle by refilling fuel for about Nu 2,000, and after reaching there we have to stay in a hotel, which is a huge expenditure for us,” Rinchen Wangdi said.

Jomotshangkha Dungkhag Police regulates traffic rules and regulation and officials of the regional transport office of the dzongkhag visit the dungkhag to conduct driving license test.

The issue was also discussed in the fourth Dzongkhag Tshogdu. The meeting decided to identify land to set up an RSTA office.

Meanwhile, the dzongkhag’s regional transport office says they are working on acquiring land and they have already put an application to dzongkhag land record office. They are planning to set up an office with a proper bus terminal within this current plan.
