Chief Justice retires formally

Chief Justice retires formallyThe Chief Justice, Lyonpo Sonam Tobgye, has formally retired, at 65. He made a formal submission for his retirement to His Majesty the King, about a month ago.

Lyonpo, while in service for the last 43 years, worked in many offices in various capacities. He served as the Master of the household to His Majesty the Third King and as Chamberlain to His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.

Besides serving as the Chief Justice of the High Court, Lyonpo was also the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court since assuming office in 2010. He has brought major reforms in the Judiciary and enhanced access to justice.

Lyonpo was also the Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee. He is also a recipient of many national and international awards, medal and recognition.
