The Bhutan Compassionate Leadership Forum was convened at the Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law yesterday. The forum explored how compassion can guide leadership, governance and global cooperation in addressing today’s challenges. Her Royal Highness Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck graced the event. The forum brought together Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi, policymakers, jurists, business leaders, academics, students, and civil society representatives.

The forum, themed “Compassionate Leadership for Peace, Justice and Sustainable Futures”, featured discussions on governance, business and justice systems.

Addressing the forum, Her Royal Highness Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck said compassion must go beyond feelings and be reflected in actions, policies and institutions.

“As we gather here today, we should remember that compassion is not measured by what we feel, but by what we choose to do. It is reflected in the policies we shape, the institutions we build, the people we protect, and the future we leave behind. The challenges facing the world are complex, but the principles that guide us are simple. May this forum strengthen our resolve to lead with wisdom, act with courage, and serve with compassion.”

According to the organisers, the forum aims to turn dialogue into action and promote compassion as a practical tool for addressing global challenges.

At the forum, Bhutan signed the Global Compassion Declaration, joining a new international effort to place compassion at the centre of leadership and policymaking.

The organisers expect more countries to sign the declaration in the coming months.

Kailash Satyarthi, the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize winner and founder of the Satyarthi Movement for Global Compassion, said the declaration is more than a statement of intent.

“This is different because this is the moral call for action. This is the moral commitment. This is taking a pledge for moral accountability that compassion converts humanity, life and planet to ensure justice, equality, sustainability and peace.”

The Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law and the Satyarthi Movement for Global Compassion signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support joint research and leadership programmes.

The event also saw the launch of the JSW-Satyarthi Compassionate Action Lab. Inspired by the vision of His Majesty the Fourth DrukGyalpo and Kailash Satyarthi, the lab will promote research, education, leadership development and policy engagement.

“This, hopefully, will emerge as a centre where the people, the students, researchers, practitioners, lawmakers and policy makers can find this place to apply compassion in different fields,” added Kailash Satyarthi, Founder, Satyarthi Movement for Global Compassion.

Participants also visited an exhibition on the life and legacy of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo and Gross National Happiness as a model of compassionate governance.
