In a move aimed at strengthening fuel distribution and supporting Thimphu’s expanding business and transport sectors, the State Trading Corporation will open a new fuel depot at Jungshina. While Thimphu has seven fuel depots, this will be the corporation’s second facility in the capital, built to reduce congestion and improve fuel accessibility.

The construction of the Nu 15 M fuel depot near the Jungshina police station is nearing completion. Built to address the growing fuel demand in Thimphu, the depot has the capacity to refuel about four thousand vehicles at a time

The facility is equipped with three dispensing units, allowing up to six vehicles to be refuelled simultaneously.

Construction of the depot began in August last year. Officials said the project, which had an eight-month construction timeline, was completed nearly three months ahead of schedule.

Beyond improving convenience for motorists, the Jungshina fuel depot is also expected to bring economic and business benefits. Taxi operators, delivery services, construction companies, and small businesses that rely heavily on fuel are expected to save time and operational costs, improving overall productivity.

Residents and businesses from Hejo, Pamtsho, Babena, Taba, Dechencholing, Kabesa, Begana and Changtagang will no longer need to travel long distances to refuel, reducing fuel wastage and travel expenses.

Sangay Dorji, a taxi driver in Babena said, “Earlier, we had to travel all the way to the town to refuel and wait in long queues. It was time-consuming and affected our daily earnings. With this fuel depot nearby, it will save us time and help taxi drivers like us make more trips in a day.”

“We are hopeful that this fuel depot will benefit local businesses. With more people coming to refuel from nearby areas, we expect increased customers and better business opportunities,” said Tenzin Om, a shopkeeper in Jungshina.

Karma Phuntsho, a resident of Jungshina said, “Previously, we had to go as far as Ramtokto and sometimes wait for nearly two hours to refuel. Having a fuel station close to our homes will be a huge relief for everyone living in this area.”

Officials say the new facility will play a crucial role in ensuring efficient fuel distribution, contributing to smoother transportation services and sustained business growth in Thimphu. The fuel depot will open on Thursday.
