Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay began his two-day official visit to Bangladesh today with a ceremonial welcome in Dhaka. The visit marks a renewed push to strengthen political, economic and development cooperation between the two neighbours.

The Prime Minister arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the morning to a ceremonial gun salute and a formal reception led by Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser.

A guard of honour and the inspection parade were held as part of the welcome ceremony. Senior members of Bangladesh’s interim government, security chiefs, and senior diplomatic representatives received the Prime Minister and the Bhutanese delegation.

The Prime Minister then travelled to the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar, where he laid a wreath in honour of Bangladesh’s freedom fighters. He also observed a minute of silence and planted a sapling at the memorial grounds.

Later in the day, the Prime Minister held a series of diplomatic engagements with the Foreign Adviser and the Commerce Adviser of Bangladesh.

In the afternoon, the Prime Minister held a bilateral meeting with the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh in Tejgaon.

During the meeting attended by ministers, secretaries, and senior officials from both sides, two Memoranda of Understanding were signed to boost cooperation in health and the economy: the MoU on Trade of International Bandwidth and other Telecommunication Services and the MoU on Appointment of Health Workforce.

These meetings, also attended by Foreign Affairs and External Trade and Industry, Commerce and Employment ministers, the Health Secretary, and senior Bhutanese officials, focused on strengthening cooperation in trade, foreign affairs, and health.

The visit continues tomorrow with meetings with political leaders, business figures, and the President of Bangladesh.
