Starting this year, the government, through BICMA, will fully fund and organise the National Film Awards in collaboration with the Film Association of Bhutan. The initiative aims to nurture and support the Bhutanese Film Industry. Marking the occasion, a new logo and trophy were unveiled today coinciding with the birthday of His Royal Highness Gyalsey Jigme Namgyal.
The Bhutan Film Awards 2024 marks a milestone as the first-ever government-initiated National Film Awards.
Since 2001, the Film Association of Bhutan has organised the Bhutan National Film Awards. However, in recent years, funding shortage has affected its continuity and credibility.
“With the government’s financial support, the quality of the Bhutanese films would be enhanced. Moreover, it will inspire filmmakers to give their best,” said Yeshey Tshering, President of the Film Association of Bhutan.
To ensure a fair and just recognition of the awards, experts from both within and outside the country were involved with measures in place to prevent conflicts of interest.
“The whole fraternity is involved in this. We as a government agency facilitate in terms of technical input as well as financial support,” said Jigme Wangdi, Director of Bhutan InfoComm and Media Authority (BICMA).
This government initiative aims to recognise and nurture cinematic talent, inspire future filmmakers, and elevate Bhutanese cinema to greater heights.
The National Film Awards will be held on 21st February, coinciding with His Majesty The King’s birthday.
