In Pema Gatshel, water pumps have ended the years-long water crisis in Norbugang Gewog’s Rinchenzor and Menchu villages. Delighted by the new development, villagers plan to grow various vegetables, which they could not do due to insufficient water. Over 40 households in the two villages have enjoyed a continuous water supply for a month now.

Water is pumped into a reservoir tank from a source below the Rinchenzor and Menchu villages.

Pump operators visit the source once a week to release water. The reservoir tank, with a capacity of 140,000 litres, is fed from different sources using three pumps.

Despite the project taking time to complete, seeing water flow from the taps installed outside their houses has brought smiles to the villagers’ faces.

“My friend and I are the operators of these pumps. Currently, we release water once a week. We have two water sources, and when we use water from both pumps, it will be sufficient for our needs,” said Rinchen Lhundup.

“Initially, we doubted whether water could reach the tank. However, with the government’s support, the water has reached the tank, and now we can drink it. We are very excited today,” said Choten Zangmo.

“In the past, we suffered a lot, carrying water on our backs and installing private mini pumps. But now, our problem is solved. We would like to thank the government for providing water to our doorsteps,” said Chedra.

In the past, without water, villagers hesitated to host guests. Now, with water at their doorsteps, residents of the two villages hope to significantly improve their living standards and livelihoods.

“We would be happy if the water flows like today even during the winter. It helps us maintain cleanliness when there is water, otherwise, it is very difficult for us. Additionally, we can even cultivate vegetables. With enough water, it is more convenient and easier to construct the house as well,” added Choten Zangmo.

“It is very difficult for us to grow cabbage, radish, and other vegetables due to the lack of water. However, I think we will not face a shortage of vegetables in the future,” added Chedra.

The project has not been handed over to the public yet.

With water flowing from the taps, the people of Rinchenzor and Menchu can say goodbye to the hardships of carrying water on their backs, especially during the dry season.
