Taking advantage of being one of the oldest members of the popular Zambalha Dairy Group in Pema Gatshel, Samdrup Dorji opened the first private Milk Processing Unit (MPU) in the district. Just about six months into the business, the unit is already a successful venture.

44-year-old Samdrup Dorji from Rinchhenzor starts his day at 7 AM. He collects about 150 litres of milk daily from his neighbours. Having worked at the dairy group in the district, Samdrup learned the operation of the processing unit and decided to open his own.

“There are many dairy farmers who are not able to be part of the group. So, I thought that I will establish a private milk processing unit separately to help them make an income,” said Samdrup.

Spending about Nu 250,000, he established the unit in January this year. He earns about Nu 200,000 a month.

“Planning to buy more cows and extend the farm. The farm is running well. Thanks to the government, we were provided with CGI sheets and cement for free,” Samdrup added.

With his initiative, it has become easier for those who are not members of the dairy group to sell their milk.

“The unit is beneficial to us. We don’t have to travel anywhere as the owner comes to pick up the milk from our doorstep. He even brings the money here. Now I am thinking to have more numbers of cows,” said Rinzin, a dairy farmer.

Samdrup’s initiative doesn’t end here, he also supports farmers by lending advance payments to support them in rearing more cattle to increase milk production.

“Now I am insisting the farmers here to plant fodders and also advising them on maintaining the hygiene of sheds and cows. I am encouraging my customers to rear more cattle,” said Samdrup.

The unit produces about five kilograms of butter and over 100 cheese balls every day and sells them in Nganglam town. Today, Samdrup’s milk processing unit is not only providing farmers with an avenue to sell their milk but also financially empowering them.
