For the first time, Bhutan will take part in the Paralympics. Three athletes left for Tokyo, Japan, today, where the 2020 edition of the Games will be held.
The International Paralympic Committee governs the Paralympic Games, a multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities.
Pema Rigsel, 34, will be competing in Para Archery. He will participate in the men’s individual recurve open.
Likewise, Gyeltshen Gyeltshen, 28, and Chimi Dema, 28, will be competing in shot put for short stature athletes. Both of them have met the minimum qualification standards to partake in international competitions.
Bhutan is participating in the Games following an invitation from the International Paralympic Committee and the World Archery Federation.
The 16th Paralympic Games is all set to take place in Tokyo in Japan from 24th August till 5th September. It was scheduled to be held last year if it was not for the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Bhutan Paralympic Committee said that the athletes are excited to be debuting at the Games. Since the establishment of the Committee in 2017, it has introduced three para sports of air rifle shooting, archery, and shot put in the country.
