BICTTA plans to establish two more FDI companies

The Bhutan ICT and Training Association (BICTTA) plans to establish at least two more Foreign Direct Investment companies in the country. This was revealed during the third Bhutan International IT and Training event held in Thimphu.

Bhutan ICT and Training Association, mandated for the promotion and development of ICT Industries, found majority of the ICT industries in Bhutan lacked capacity and exposure. This results in the slow growth of the industry despite being recognised as a priority sector.

To combat this, the Association has been organisng the event since 2014. It looks at ways to connect Bhutanese start-ups to international investor community and facilitate platforms for local industry to explore international business partnerships.

So far the Association has promoted 60 business partnerships and established two FDI companies employing more than three hundred ICT professionals.

“FDI people found that Bhutanese can be a good market for them because our education is quite good. We just need to have re-skilling on that,” the president of BICTTA, Phub Gyeltshen, said.

The Director of Department of Information Technology and Telecom,Jigme Thinlye Namgyal said  ICT can be used as an enabler for the business.

“In any companies, be it agriculture sector or non-agriculture sector, industrial sector, we can use ICT to drive in efficiency, to reduce turnaround time and to connect with the outside world in a cheaper way.”

The two-day event saw more than 60 leading international ICT companies from Asian Oceanian Computing Industry Organization, or ASOCIO, of which Bhutan is a member.
