The Panbang Dairy Cooperative in Zhemgang is just a year old but despite that, it is doing brisk business. Today, the cooperative owns a milk processing unit, which is further milking fortunes.
Members of the cooperative said, the opening of the milk processing unit at Sonamthang has benefited them a lot. They added that the unit has enabled them to enhance income through sales of dairy products such as cheese, butter, milk, and whey.
“We mostly sell milk, butter and cheese. We also make ice creams and yogurts,” said one of the members, Wangpo.
The unit collects about 50 litres of milk daily from its 16 members to make various dairy products. Locals there said, the number of farmers rearing cattle has increased following the establishment of milk processing unit.
“In a month, we get about Nu 6000 by selling milk. In the past, we sold less than today and the income from it was used for self consumption,” added another member, Gyelmo.
The Dzongkhag Livestock Sector supported the setting up of the milk processing unit. There are four such establishments in Zhemgang.
