Villagers in Sagteng Gewog, gaining sewing skills

When it comes to stitching and sewing clothes, villagers in Sagteng Gewog, Trashigang have to travel for hours either to Rangjoong or Trashigang town. But in the near future, villagers are likely to overcome this stumbling block.

The Labour Ministry is currently training villagers to acquire tailoring skills. Despite freezing temperature in open air, some 36 villagers have committed their time in learning fundamentals of sewing skills

“Well now, we can buy tailor machines and stitch clothes. We are also equipped to sew clothes for others,” said one of the farmers, Tshering Choden. Some other participants also spoke on similar lines.

“Being a woman, it is helpful for us as we can earn by opening tailoring business. I am handy stitching tegoes and wonjus,” said Tashi Lhamo, who is also a participant of tailoring workshop.

According to Labour Ministry, the rationale behind empowering villagers in tailoring skills is to eke out a livelihood by stitching clothes, and designing bags and purses.

“Sagteng is a very remote place and it is needless to travel far for stitching purposes. They can do it here and also earn some income through tailoring business,” said Tshering Pelden, the trainer.

The Labour Ministry is funding the three-month long training programme which ends next week.
