Bridge addresses traveling woes of villagers in Merdag Chiwog

Lives of farmers in Bedengphu-Merdag Chiwog in Kangpar Gewog, Trashigang have become much easier now. The reason- a motor-able bridge was built over the stream which connects Merdag with rest of the dzongkhag.

The 28-metre-long bailey Langphu Bridge was open to traffic a few months ago. It benefits over 400 villagers in the chiwog. Prior to the bridge inauguration, motorists had to wade across the stream to reach the chiwog and during heavy downpour season, swelling stream hindered the vehicles to pass through.

The small suspension bridge was the main mode of transportation then but that wasn’t easy for the villagers as they had exhausting experience, carrying goods on their backs.

“But now, vehicles reach near our homes and we don’t have to carry things on our backs. That way, life has become much easier for us,” said one of the locals named, Tandin Wangchuk.

Gewog officials are hoping more number of villagers will take up commercial farming. “The bridge has solved all the travelling woes of the villagers. Vehicle now get to their homes and we hope they can take up commercial farming,” told the gewog’s Mangmi, Sangay Tenzin to BBS reporter Tshering Zam, who recently visited the gewog.

Trashigang Dzongkhag Administration in collaboration with Department of Roads constructed the bridge.
