Despite strict enforcement of traffic rules, many defy it

Despite strict implementation of traffic rules and regulations, police in the capital say there are not many who abide the rules.

Motorists are often caught driving under the influence of alcohol even on dry day and zero tolerance day. Police said most accidents are happening due to human errors.

“We conducted highway checking between Thimphu and Paro on Tuesday. Within few hours, we caught 10 drivers driving under intoxication, that too on dry day when they are not supposed to drink,” said Major Yeshay T Phuntsho, the Superintendent of Traffic Police, adding that they don’t see improvement although awareness was conducted.

Traffic police started checking along the Thimphu-Phuentshogling and Wangdue highway, a few weeks ago and found out that over 87 drivers violated traffic laws.

“Of the 87 cases, 40 were related to drunk driving while rest are for committing offences of over speeding and driving without license,” added Major Yeshay T Phuntsho.

Traffic officials also said these days over speeding and sleep driving are main cause of car accidents. They added that road traffic rules are enforced not to penalise the people but for the larger benefit of the public.

Traffic police stressed that driving under intoxication may be pleasurable but it takes lives. Therefore, before it is too late to regret, driving with caution is important.

Furthermore, the traffic officials said they are now going to strictly monitor traffic in urban areas and along highways and penalise the offenders without any excuse. This is to avoid accidents, save lives and properties.
