Bhutan’s first IT College to open next month

Gyalpoizhing College, Bhutan’s first ever Information Technology college in Monggar is all set to open its doors to its first batch of IT students on July 12, announced the Prime Minister earlier this week.

The college is located near the Gyalpoizhing Central School. With courses designed in line with the current demand for IT skills in the job market, the college aims to churn out employable IT graduates. The college says IT graduates constitute the second largest group of unemployed graduates.

The Dean of the Student Affairs of Gyalpoizhing College, Lhendup Dorji said the college is looking at launching programs such as Bachelor of Science in Information Technology next year.  “It is more focused on programming, a skill that is relevant and in demand in the market,” he said.

Lhendup Dorji added that offering normal or conventional courses, which are already being offered by other colleges, would only increase the country’s unemployment figures. “Our aim is to reduce unemployment rate,” he said. “We would like our graduates to be job creators rather than job seekers.”

The college is offering Bachelors of Computer Applications this year. It plans to offer degrees programmes in Cyber Security, Multimedia and Animation next year.

The college has a pool of faculty from India. The IT College says it will adopt new teaching-learning approach, which will be more of practical lessons.
