Affected households agree to reclaim compensation from MHPA

Following a re-verification by the dzongkhag adminsitration last week, some 17 households of Draateng Gewog in Trongsa have agreed to accept the initial compensation amount from the Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project Authority (MHPA).

The households blamed the project for the damages their houses suffered.The dzongkhag administration will soon forward the re-assessed damage report to the Project Authority for the payment of compensation. Draagteng Gewog’s Gup was also present during the time of re-assessment.

Earlier, the dzongkhag administration officials and the project authority had jointly verified the extent of damages caused.

“During the first verification, dzongkhag committee could not visit the affected house, only engineers went to assess the damages from technical perspective,” said Trongsa Dzongrab, Karma Dendup, adding that when the dzongkhag team recently went to check the damaged structures, owners concurred to accept the previous same provided by MHPA.

The affected households requested for re-verification since they were unhappy with the compensation received in March this year. The amount ranged from Nu 193 to a little over Nu 8,000. It was returned to the project office through gewog administration.

People lodged a complaint against the project authority with the dzongkhag administration after the wall of their houses developed cracks. They said it was due to traffic of heavy vehicles working for hydroelectric project in the area.
