Man severely hurt in minor factory explosion succumbs

One of two men, who were severely injured in a minor explosion caused by an electric short circuit in Pasakha, last month, succumbed to the injuries. The man had been referred to Kolkata in India after he suffered severe burns due to the explosion.

The incident took place at the Neethsel Private Limited, a pharmaceutical manufacturing factory, where the man worked.

BBS tried to contact the General Manager of Neetshel Private Limited but the management said that it was in no position to make any comments.

The Regional office of the Department of Labor in Phuentshogling was not yet informed about the worker’s death.

According to the Labour and Employment Act of Bhutan 2007, an employer shall compensate all his or her employees against death due to work accident.

“As per the regulation of working conditions 2012, the employer has to compensate the employee with 1080 days into national minimum wage. In addition to that, the employer has to pay 70 percent of the last basic pay for a year,” said Phuentshogling’s regional director of labour, Sonam Tenzin.

This year, four injuries at work place were reported to the Regional Office of the Department of Labour in Phuentshogling. This was the first instance this year where a worker lost his life. The man who died was 23 years old. He was from Zhemgang.
