Starting this year, 20th March will be observed as the international day of happiness as declared by the UN, last year. To celebrate the first international happiness day, Bhutan has declared the day a government holiday.
The international day of happiness was declared after the UN with 193 members, unanimously, adopted Bhutan’s proposal of happiness for a holistic approach towards development in 2011.
The date for the celebrations is also marked as 20 March, as it is said to be an equinox day when day and night are of equal length.
The International Day of Happiness is supposed to be a movement to promote happiness as a universal goal of human beings.
The theme this year is to promote gathering of families, friends and communities. Several educational and cultural activities will be organized across the country to observe the day.
